What do you get when you take some of the more popular characters from two different franchises and pit them against each other? A successful series of games! This topic is about the second one, Marvel vs Capcom 2 as it’s the only version I can play (since MvC3 isn’t for PS2).

This game, and I imagine the first one (and possibly third?), is a port from the arcade. It originally went to Dreamcast and was pretty successful and was then ported over to PS2 and Xbox.

Story
If it has a story in-game then I don’t know what it is. Based on the final boss, I guess it has something to do with Abyss.. So I’m afraid you’ll have to make up your own story here.

Gameplay
It controls like pretty much every other fighter except the screen is a bit wider. The major difference in this game is that instead of three punch/kick attack strengths, like in most, there’s only two. The other two buttons have been replaced by assist buttons because now instead of one vs one you have teams of three.

This game also contains a point system. Points are earned for every match you play and for time spent in training. You take your points and go to the “Secret Factor” menu and can buy more characters, different character color schemes, and more backgrounds to fight in. And this, my friends, is probably the most frustrating part of the whole game.

Secret Factor – The Store
Let’s say you’re like me. You want to play as Iron Man. He’s not one of the starting characters and you start the game with no points. So you go spend some time playing the aracde mode (and lose horribly), leave the game on while you sleep in training to earn points (10 points a minute) and eventually decide to go to the store. You have a nice 7000 points now and are ready to buy Iron Man. Well, chances are he’s not going to be one of the character available. See, you can’t just go into the store and buy any character you want. The store offers a whopping 4 selections (and not all of which are characters) at a time. Exit and re-enter the store and sometimes the selections change but most of the time it’s the same selections but the point cost changes slightly.

Buy a few that pop up and you would expect the now-empty slots to be refreshed with something new. But that’s not always the case. Sometimes you do this and come back and the slot says “SOLD OUT” and you’re stuck. Now you have a few characters you didn’t want, you’re running out of points and you still haven’t freakin seen Iron Man (or whatever character you really want to buy). Buy some more and oops, now you’re out of points. Oh and look who finally decided to show up now that you’re out of points. Exit, go get more points, come back and now he’s gone again.

To me this is probably the most frustrating part of the game and has been driving me crazy. Why couldn’t they have made it so you could buy any character you want from a list? Make the other stuff random. I honestly don’t care about owning every different color scheme or every unlockable map. I just want all the characters in the game so I can play as who I want to actually play as and create cool teams. But no. We’re stuck with this four-slots-at-a-time system that may or may not ever show you the character you want to actually buy when you have the points to actually buy him/her.

Difficulty
To a casual fighting game person like myself, the difficulty in this game is off the scale. Even on the easiest setting it continually whoops me on level 3 and beyond. I have gotten to the final boss once. Once. And even then it probably took me ten+ minutes to actually beat it. The computer is relentless.

If you’re one of those people who play fighting games ALL THE TIME and can actually pull off 800 moves in a row without your hands cramping up on you, the difficulty probably won’t be too bad for you. Otherwise.. well, beware.

Music
GONNA TAKE YOU FOR A RIDE! *doot doot de doot doot* GONNA TAKE YOU FOR A RIDE! *doot doot de doot doot* GONNA TAKE YOU FOR A RIDE! *doot doot de doot doot* GONNA TAKE YOU FOR A RIDE! *doot doot de doot doot* GONNA TAKE YOU FOR A RIDE! *doot doot de doot doot* GONNA TAKE YOU FOR A RIDE! *doot doot de doot doot* GONNA TAKE YOU FOR A RIDE! *doot doot de doot doot*

You’ll be hearing that over and over and over and over. It will never leave your brain. Ever. :smithicide:

The rest of the music is OK I guess. But that one song will haunt your dreams.

Overall
Overall, this game (while frustrating in some areas) is actually pretty fun. Playing as a mix of Marvel and Capcom characters is genius and highly addictive. I just wish they would let you buy the characters you want at any time rather than having to basically play a slot machine-type luck system.

Anyone else play this game? Tips? Suggestions??

Heya! Oooh yeah definitely exit re-enter the store more. Do it enough and what you want pops up. The more you buy the more expensive things become.. sooo yeah.

I love this game. I’ve owned it on the dreamcast, PS2, Xbox and now the PS3, Ive unlocked everything on it multiple times. Best combo, Cable/Iron Man/ Sentinel. You can fireball everything to death.

Last boss is mean, but you can take him down with cable’s hyper viper with ease. Any other fire baller character (i.e. almost all of them) can also take him out. (the first incarnation of him is easily taken down by up close attacks and blocking at the right moment, 2nd can be taken down by keeping distance and projectile attacking (make sure you are friends with the block button) 3rd one is a mix, just be sure to always be on gaurd and use the screen filling projectile moves whenever possible.
