Prologue
CECIL and his SOLDIERS are on the airship
SOLDIER
“Captain Cecil! We will arrive at Baron soon!”
CECIL
ah….
SOLDIER
“I knew it, the captain is…”
SOLDIER
“Just how many people died for the crystal? I know we were ordered, but isn’t it still a crime?”
There is a flashback to Mysidia, where CECIL takes the crystal. The flashback then ends.
I’d like to make a note here. There is no dialog in the flashback in FFIVa. I recalled that there was in a previous version, and after looking around, I’ve found that it was in our “FF2” and the Japanese FFIV easy type. In these versions, the Elder asks what they (I assume Mysidia) have done (to Baron) to deserve this. The wizards refuse to get out of the way, and are killed. The Elder then changes his mind and says that they can have the crystal. Why this was cut out of FFIV hard type, Chronicles and Advance is beyond me.
SOLDIER
“we are the proud Red Wings group! How many times must we steal from the weak?”
CECIL
“Stop it!”
SOLDIER
But captain!
SOLDIER
The wizards posed no resistance to us. How could we steal from them?”
CECIL
“Everyone understand! For the sake of the Kingdom of Baron, and in the interest of our own welfare, we had to obtain the crystal using any means necessary. His Majesty judged that the Mysidians’ knew too many secrets about the crystal. As the Kingdom of Baron’s airborne group, the Red Wings, we are to carry out any of His Majesty’s orders unconditionally.”
SOLDIER
“captain…”
SOLDIER
“Captain, monsters!”
CECIL
“All hands, prepare for battle!” (literally: all hands, deploy for battle)
In the battle with the three floating eyes, CECIL uses akai kiba/red fang and the battle ends
SOLDIER
“guwaaa!”
CECIL
“Are you all right?”
SOLDIER
“more are coming!”
CECIL
“crap”
In the battle with the Zuu, CECIL uses aoi kiba/blue fang and the battle ends
CECIL
“Is everyone safe?”
SOLDIER
“yes!”
SOLDIER
“but lately there have been a lot of monsters…. certainly too many”
CECIL
“Is something causing this to happen?”
SOLDIER
“We have arrived at Baron!”
CECIL
“All right, prepare for landing.”
Red Wings land at Baron Castle, BEIGAN meets CECIL at the front gate
BEIGAN
“oh, you were able to obtain the crystal, is that right?”
CECIL
“But the people of Mysidia offered no resistance….”
BEIGAN
“what is it you’re trying to say? Come now, our Majesty awaits.”
BEIGAN leads CECIL to the room outside of the throne room
BEIGAN
“Cecil-dono, please wait here for just a moment.” (literally: for a short while)
BEIGAN goes into the throne room and approaches KING BARON
BEIGAN
“Your Majesty… I’m afraid that twerp, Cecil, is starting to question your Majesty’s ways.” (“Cecil no yatsume” is extremely vulgar. I used “twerp” but I don’t know if that’s a strong enough word to represent it)
KING BARON
“Is that so? I understand; as expected the head of the imperial guard is well informed! However, it doesn’t matter as long as he comes in and hands over the crystal. Call Cecil in.”
BEIGAN
“yes sire.”
BEIGAN walks back to the door
BEIGAN
“Cecil-dono, His Majesty is calling for you please.”
CECIL enters the throne room
KING BARON
“Cecil, I have put you through trouble. So, the crystal is..?”
CECIL
“yes, it’s here.”
BEIGAN takes the crystal from CECIL
“Crystal of Water” is handed over
BEIGAN
“it seems to be real.”
KING BARON
“I see! Oh how dazzlingly beautiful it is! You’re dismissed, Cecil!”
CECIL starts to leave, stops, turns back
CECIL
“your Majesty!”
KING BARON
“wha..what is it?”
BEIGAN
“Wh, what is it?”
CECIL
“What is your Majesty’s intention? Everyone is starting to harbor feelings of disloyalty about your Majesty and his decisions!”
KING BARON
“are you starting to feel this way?”
CECIL
“! I could never do that….”
KING BARON
“Did you think I wouldn’t know all about how you feel? You’re the person I placed the most faith in and yet you still don’t trust me. It’s disappointing, but this is the end of your post with the Red Wings. As of now, your responsibility as the captain of the airborne troops is over.” (literally, untied)
CECIL
“your Majesty!”
The imperial guards come and start to force CECIL out of the room
KING BARON
“Now a new duty will be placed upon you. It is said that a beast of illusion (phantom beast) appears frequently when approaching Mist valley. You are to defeat this beast, then deliver this bomb ring to Mist village. You will depart tomorrow morning.”
CECIL tries to find a way around the guards, but is unable to do so when KAIN enters the room
KAIN
“Please wait!”
KAIN walks up next to CECIL, who just turns and looks
KAIN
“Like that, Cecil is…”
This line.. I’m not 100% sure on. Was Kain trying to say that Cecil wasn’t trying to question the king (the earlier conversation about trust/dissent) or was he trying to say that without the Red Wings that Cecil would be unable to carry out such a task (killing the phantom beast)? If it’s the former, just how long was Kain listening in on the conversation before he came into the room? The latter seems to make more sense with the fact the King then sends Kain with him with the next line.
The imperial guards push CECIL & KAIN back towards the door. KING BARON & BEIGAN get up and walk behind the guards
KING BARON
“Kain. If you’re worried about him during this matter then you and Cecil will go together!”
CECIL
“your Majesty!”
KING BARON
“I will not say anything more about this matter! Take the ring and leave.”
Obtained the “Bomb Ring”
CECIL
“your Majesty!”
The two are finally forced outside of the throne room
CECIL
“Sorry Kain, for getting you involved…”
KAIN
“If the phantom beast is defeated, His Majesty will forgive you and return the Red Wings to you.”
The way I read it, Kain is uncertain of whether or not the phantom beast will be defeated.
CECIL
“….”
KAIN
“Don’t worry about it and leave the preparations to me. Tonight you should just relax, you scamp.”
“yatsume” again, this time Kain using it towards Cecil..unlike Beigan, I get the sense that he’s using it in a more playful, familiarity way though. It’s hard to find a word that’ll fit that isn’t too harsh and doesn’t make Kain sound like some old man talking to a whippersnapper.
KAIN leaves off the right, while CECIL heads off to go to his room. Along the way, ROSA catches up with him
ROSA
“Cecil!”
CECIL turns around to face her
ROSA
“Thank goodness you’re safe. This “extra urgent” mission you were sent on had me worried.”
CECIL
“Safe…? The wizards didn’t even land a single scratch on us…”
CECIL turns and tries to walk away from her
ROSA
“Cecil!”
CECIL turns around to face her again
ROSA
“I will come to your room later..”
CECIL
“alright….”
ROSA leaves and CECIL returns on the path to his room. when CID stops him
CID
“Cecil, ya’ve returned!”
CID goes down the stairs and comes out to speak with CECIL
CID
“Rosa was worried! Ya better not make her cry! By the way, is my beautiful airship okay? How rough was your crew with it? Why’re ya looking so down for anyway?”
CECIL
“Cid, the truth is…”
CID
“What’d ya say? Defeat the phantom beast? But there is no one else that could possibly control the Red Wings except you! Jeeze, his Majesty is acting weird. He wanted me to make a brand new style of airship but to tell ya the truth, I do not want my airships used as instruments of murder/war. The towns people are feelin’ weird with what’s going on. In any case, be careful! Use your dark sword to deliver the final blow! I better get back home. My daughter gets fussy if I don’t come.”
Cid isn’t a hick. Sorry if I’m making him sound like that, but he speaks a little different from Cecil and I wasn’t really sure how to show that.
CID leaves and CECIL finally reaches his tower and is about to enter his room when he speaks to his maid.
MAID
“I’ve changed the sheets on your bed. You’re leaving early tomorrow? For tonight, please just rest easily. Goodnight.”
The maid leaves and CECIL enters his room/his bed and goes to sleep. In the middle of the night he awakens..
CECIL
“What is happening with his Majesty? When he was a knight he was known for being a strong and kind person. He even raised Kain and I as if we were his own children [even though we had no relation to him]. Is there something so great to be gained by obtaining Mysidia’s crystal through orders to take it away from villagers who couldn’t even defend themselves?”
ROSA enters the room
ROSA
“Cecil!”
CECIL faces her for a moment, then turns away from her
ROSA
“What is going on? It was urgent for you to go to Mysidia, now you have to defeat the phantom beast. And ever since you came back you’ve been acting different.”
CECIL
“No, it’s nothing.”
ROSA
“If that’s really the truth, then face me.”
CECIL
“In Mysidia, I killed innocent people for the crystal! On the outside I am a Dark Knight; on the inside, my heart is too..!”
ROSA approaches CECIL, who is now facing down
ROSA
“….you are not that kind of person.”
CECIL looks away from ROSA once again
CECIL
“I can’t go against his Majesty. I’m just a cowardly Dark Knight..”
Now ROSA turns away and takes a few steps
ROSA
“Cecil of the Red Wings isn’t someone who would complain like that! The Cecil I love is..”
CECIL finally turns and faces her
ROSA
“Tomorrow you are going to Mist. If something should happen to you, I…”
ROSA looks down (presumably crying?) when CECIL gets out of bed and approaches her
CECIL
“Don’t worry. Kain is coming with me… it’s late, you should rest as well.”
ROSA
“Be careful, okay?”
ROSA leaves the room, CECIL takes a few steps and stops
CECIL
“Thank you Rosa… however, I am a Dark Knight. And you are..”
It seems to me that Cecil was in the middle of saying that she is a white mage/healer; I believe this is basically saying “we’re from two different worlds”
The night ends, CECIL meets up with KAIN at front entrance..
KAIN
“Are you ready to go, Cecil?”
CECIL
“I’m counting on you Kain.”
KAIN
“feh, just leave it to me.”
Prologue music starts, the two exit the castle. Scrolling titles begin…
Thus, the Dark Knight Cecil,
the captain of the Kingdom of Baron’s airship group, the “Red Wings,”
was stripped of his command.
Together with the captain of the Dragon Knights, Kain,
they leave Baron castle and head towards the remote village of Mist
which lay in a valley enclosed in fog.
Man has always dreamed of flying a ship in the heavens,
an airship. However, when the dream became reality,
it became a tool of greed.
With the airship group, the “Red Wings”
the Kingdom of Baron created the strongest military.
Why is this mighty force seeking and possessing the crystals?
Also, why are so many monsters starting to appear?
The crystal is only quietly
shinining its light

Prologue Bonus
Here’s the conversation with Kain and the two guards at his table.
KAIN
“what’s wrong?”
CECIL
“I’m sorry, Kain..”
KAIN
“Are you still saying stuff like that? That’s not like you.”
CECIL
“I carry this dark sword for His Majesty but that is to defend Baron. It’s not to steal from people.”
KAIN
“So you blame yourself? His majesty has his reasons.”
This might also be read as “Don’t blame yourself, I’m sure his majesty has his reasons.”
CECIL
“Kain, I’m envious of you.”
KAIN
“If I had agreed and learned to use a dark sword I would have probably been promoted to a higher rank. However, my father was a Dragon Knight and he died when I was a child. As a Dragon Knight now I can sense his spirit with me.”
CECIL
“…”
KAIN
“feh. I’ve said too much, haven’t I? Anyway, forget what you’re feeling because like that you’re no competition at all and the Phantom Beast will beat us.”
I actually struggled with this bit. I also thought it could be read as “feh, I’ve said way too much haven’t I? Anyway, don’t think about it. And don’t think you’re any competition; the one who will beat the Phantom Beast will be me.” He uses ore a lot which makes him sound very arrogant. I’m not sure which translation is actually correct however.
CECIL
“I’m not going to lose!” (I’m not defeated yet!)
KAIN
“Tomorrow comes early. You should get to sleep early” (Go to bed early)
If you talk to him again after that speech, he says..
KAIN
“What’s the matter? You can’t sleep?”
If you talk to the guards at the table you find out where Mist is and one guy’s opinion on Cecil and Kain teaming up.
GUARD 1
“Mist valley is north west of Baron. I’ve heard that there is always a thick fog covering it.”
GUARD 2
“I think when our Dragon Knight’s Kain-san and the Red Wing’s Cecil-san join forces that it’ll be scary!”
Guard 2 is the one who confirms that these guys are Dragon Knights even though they don’t wear the same armor. He speaks as a member of the group, referring to Kain. It reads kind of weird, I admit. Maybe it might read better as: “I think when my master, the Dragon Knight’s Kain-san, and the Red Wing’s Cecil-san join together that it’ll be a scary force.”
