FINAL FANTASY IV ADVANCE
Mist Valley
Our heroes go into BARON NO MACHI (the Town of Baron) to stock up on supplies and talk to the locals. Upon entering the town, they see a younger guy walking around.
YOUNGER GUY
“Cecil of the Red Wings! If you pass through a cave in the north-west you will reach Mist valley.”
Inside of the ITEM SHOP, they find a woman walking around
WOMAN:
“If you’re going to travel, please don’t forget potions, antidotes and tents.”
Inside the INN, they find a little girl walking around, a woman and a bartender.
GIRL
“why does big brother (oniichan) look like that? Are you a bad person?” (literally: perhaps he’s a bad person)
WOMAN
“Ce…Cecil-sama of Red Wings! I have done nothing wrong. I have paid my taxes…”
BARTENDER
“Why if it isn’t the castle’s Dark Knight. Money? Don’t be absurd. I can’t take your money.”
Outside, they find an older man wandering around
OLD MAN
“Soldiers are being taught how to use a dark sword. What is the king thinking?”
And another woman..
WOMAN
“by making a move towards Mist… surely something is starting to happen!”
..and a hyperactive boy
KID
“waaah! the Dark Knight is scary! But.. he’s also kind of cool too, isn’t he?”
Off in the middle of nowhere is a little old lady..
OLD WOMAN
“huh? The door on the building located on the other end of town? It’s the underground water path that leads to the castle. Right now it’s locked.”
Inside the building with the Devil’s Road is a guard.
GUARD
“This is the Devil’s Road and it connects with Mysidia. Once it was used regularly to utilize trade with Mysidia but now it has been sealed and cannot be used. Below [this room] is a training room.”
The group decides to stop by Rosa’s house where they run into..ROSA NO HAHA (Rosa’s mother)
ROSA’S MOTHER
“What on earth is the king doing these days? There’s talk that you all are not heroes and have done something serious in Mysidia. So, I beg you, don’t drag Rosa into this.”
Now they stop by Cid’s house.. where they talk to Cid’s daughter.
CID’S DAUGHTER
“Father was up all night again! He thinks he’s still young… Mr. Cecil, please say something to him. Everyone in town is losing faith in the king and his soldiers however, you are a good person. Of course father always tells people in town that.”
I always thought that Rosa was Cid’s daughter from the way he cared for her. Instead, his daughter is an unnamed NPC who we only know as his daughter because she calls him “otousan.” I learned something new, hoorah.
And they overhear Cid talking in his sleep…
CID
“(snoring/sleeping noise) the new engine is finished! (more snoring)”
And finally, the dancer.. the heroes couldn’t forget her.
DANCER
“Dark knight! I.. how could I speak badly about the king? That’s it, I’ll show you okay?”
Might read a little better as: “That’s it, I’ll show you my loyalty, okay?” or “I’ll show you how much I love the king” anything like that. I find it weird that her idea of showing her loyalty is to break out into a dance, but, hey, whatever floats her boat.
Having scared some of the locals, learned a little more about potions, tents and antidotes, and spending some gil, the party is now ready to head out to the valley of Mist.
Our heroes reach Mist no Doukutsu (Cave of Mist/Mist Cave). As the heroes progress through the cave and have to encounter way too many “random” battles, they hear a voice…
VOICE
“Please turn back”
CECIL
“Who’s there?”
Getting no reply, they decide to press on. As they near the exit, they hear the voice again.
VOICE
“You will leave immediately”
KAIN
“Does this voice belong to the Phantom Beast?”
Again they ignore it and continue for the exit. As they reach it, something happens..
VOICE
“You are from Baron…”
KAIN
“Who are you!?”
VOICE
“If you leave here, you will not be hurt. You must leave at once.” (“Leave and you won’t be hurt. You must leave at once.”)
KAIN
“You’re not going to reveal yourself?”
VOICE
“You’re not turning back…right?”
–> yes
–> no
[choosing no will just simply turn the party around and you’ll have to go through the same dialog when you decide to change your mind.]
The heroes are resolved to go through that exit, so they yell out that “yes, they are going to continue”
CECIL
“this bomb ring must still be delivered to Mist Village!”
VOICE
“Then.. there is no choice!”
KAIN
“The mist is gathering!”
A bunch of mist gathers and forms the Mist Dragon which the party must fight. During the battle..
The dragon’s figure is reverting back to mist!
The dragon then turns to mist.. and all attacks will miss. Eventually…
It’s changing its form back! Now is a chance to attack!
Eventually the dragon is defeated… and the two exit the cave to reach the valley where the village lies.
A note: the VOICE (who we later learn is Rydia’s mother) is using very polite speech even though she’s making the demand that they leave. It’s almost more of a request rather than a demand, until the end.
The two enter MIST NO MURA (Mist Village/Village of Mist). As they enter town, the two stop when the bomb ring starts to glow.
CECIL
“The ring is..glowing!?”
The ring releases tons of..bombs.. that ravage the village.
KAIN
“This is..!”
CECIL
“This is why we came here…”
KAIN
“to burn this village down…”
CECIL
“WHYY!! KING BAAAARON!” [essentially he’s just screaming the line]
VOICE:
(sounds of crying)
CECIL
“that [sound] is..?”
The two rush up to the north end of town to find a girl looking over a woman. The girl notices the two.
LITTLE GIRL
“my mom’s dragon died so my mom also… (sniffling/crying)”
CECIL
“!”
KAIN
“come to think of it, I’ve heard about those with the power to summon monsters. They are called summoners.”
CECIL
“it can’t be. We defeated the dragon, and this girl’s mother also…[died]”
The girl, realizing they were the ones who beat the dragon, steps back out of fear.
LITTLE GIRL
“Then.. you are the ones who did this to my mother’s dragon!”
CECIL
“by no means did we mean to kill your mother..”
KAIN
“Seems His Majesty knew about the summoners of this villager and wanted us to wipe them out…”
CECIL
“How can this be?” (or “Unbelievable!” or anything that basically carries a meaning of surprise/horror at what has happened)
KAIN
“It might be pathetic, but [it seems like] we have to kill the girl too.”
Kain’s speech here could also be read as “it’s regrettable” or “it’s a pity.” The way the line is, it makes it sound as if he’s really unsure of himself here. It’s more like a “do we really have to?” as opposed to a “we MUST” kind of statement.
CECIL
“Kain!”
KAIN
“If it’s not done, we’re finished!”
I assume, with this line, he’s referring to not only their positions, but probably their lives as well, as they will be committing treason.
CECIL
“She’s a child!”
KAIN
“Are you defying His Majesty?”
CECIL
“If following His Majesty means to commit such a slaughter again, I will not follow him!”
KAIN
“feh, I had a feeling you’d say that. I can’t let you escape Baron alone.”
CECIL
“Kain?”
KAIN
“I may owe His Majesty a lot, but how could I bring shame to the name of the Dragon Knights?”
CECIL
“Then Kain, you too..”
KAIN
“However, the country of Baron has the best military in the world. And as just two people, there is nothing we can do. We need to go to other countries and seek help. We must also save Rosa.”
CECIL
“Thank you, Kain.”
KAIN
“It’s not for you.”
CECIL
“?”
Kain looks away for a moment, before turning back to continue talking.
KAIN
“Anyway, it’s dangerous here. We need to leave the village quickly. What should we do about the child?”
CECIL
“We’ll take her with us.”
The two, having made up their mind, approach the little girl.
CECIL
“Come, it’s dangerous here. Together we’ll leave…”
LITTLE GIRL
“NO!”
The girl backs away and Kain approaches her.
KAIN
“stop or we’ll take you by force!”
This line is more of a “if you don’t cooperate, then we’ll take you by force.”
LITTLE GIRL
“Don’t come any closer!”
She really starts to back up…
CECIL
“Please wait!”
Both pursue her..
LITTLE GIRL
“I said no! You both..! I hate you both!”
A battle begins with her..
LITTLE GIRL
“I already said NOOOOOOOooo!!”
She then uses Summon which summons Titan, who uses Jishin to rip a hole in the Earth and knock our heroes out and cause quite a big bit of damage to the world map. Cecil then awakens in a field along with the girl. There is no sight of Kain.
CECIL
“Thank goodness. This girl is okay…!!”
Cecil, noticing his friend missing, starts calling out for him.
CECIL
“Kain? Kain?”
He then realizes he can’t stay..
CECIL
“I won’t be able to stay here forever… I can’t escape without the girl. Kain…please be alive.”
He picks the girl up and begins to make his way to the next available village.
He takes the girl to OASIS NO MURA KAIPO (Oasis Village Kaipo)
CECIL
“this girl needs a place to rest..”
After glancing around, he spots the inn and goes for it. Inside, he talks to the inn keeper.
INN KEEPER
“Welcome. oh? The girl looks bad. come, please hurry and take her to the room!”
CECIL
“I’m in your debt” (it’s basically a very polite form of “thank you”)
He places the girl in bed, and she comes to.
CECIL
“You’re awake.”
LITTLE GIRL
“…..”
CECIL
“…you still haven’t told me your name.”
LITTLE GIRL
“…..”
CECIL
“..you don’t have to forgive me for killing your mother… only [please] let me protect you.”
LITTLE GIRL
“…..”
With no more words to be said, the two go to bed. They are interrupted in the middle of the night when several Baron troops enter the room.
GENERAL
“I found you, Cecil!”
LITTLE GIRL
“!”
CECIL
“Please wait! Baron’s king is..”
GENERAL
“It’s the king’s command: Mist’s survivor, the girl, is to be given over [to me]. A person from Mist is dangerous.” [literally, he’s saying her existence, because she’s from Mist, makes her dangerous to Baron]
CECIL
“What!?”
LITTLE GIRL
“!”
GENERAL
“now, hand the girl over!”
CECIL
“I refuse!”
A battle begins with the soldiers and the general. After they are all defeated, the girl speaks.
LITTLE GIRL
“I’m sorry, because of me..”
CECIL
“I made a mistake. And that mistake still isn’t over..”
LITTLE GIRL
“but you protected me…”
CECIL
“….”
LITTLE GIRL
“I’m Rydia…”
CECIL
“Thank you… Rydia.”
“Summoner Rydia became your companion!
The night ends. Well rested, a new day begins.
CECIL
“All right! Ready to go!” (literally departure, time to depart, that kind of thing)
Little did he know that a new quest to save his love was about to begin.
