FINAL FANTASY IV ADVANCE
Light of the Desert
Having been refreshed, the two decide to explore Oasis Village Kaipo and talk to some locals.
OLD WOMAN IN THE INN
“Sage Tela-sama and his daughter Anna were on good terms, but then Anna ran away from home….”
TRAVELING SCHOLAR
“Ahh, I’m a traveling scholar. I’d like to take my research east of Damcyan, to Fabul, but a peculiar old man won’t let anyone pass the waterway channel.”
WOMAN OUTSIDE
“If you’re leading such a small child, be sure to put her in the back row.”
DANCER
“I aspire to be a Damcyan dancer but the waterway channel is full of monsters. … will you watch my synchronized [dance]?”
KID
“The waterway channel is to the northeast. But, lately eight water snakes come out!”
(There are more NPCs, .. I’ll do them later)
The group decides to go meet this strange old man and enter the Chika suimyaku minami guchi (South Entrance to the Waterway Channel). Upon exploring, they find the old man blocking the bridge leading deeper into the cave.
OLD MAN
“Who are you? From here on out this place is filled with monsters. It’s too dangerous for youngins like you. Go back to Kaipo.”
Unable to pass further, they decide to return to Kaipo and continue the search. While exploring, they come to a house on the north-east side. Upon entering they find… ROSA in bed!
CECIL
“Rosa!”
He rushes to her side
CECIL
“Rosa…”
ROSA
“…uun… Cecil.. don’t die Cecil!”
Cecil goes to the old man standing nearby to try and get an explanation.
OLD MAN:
“To cure her high fever illness, the phantom gem ‘Light of the Desert’ is necessary. It lies in the cave of the Ant Lion beast.”
Note: there is no mention of “desert fever” and the kanji for it means “high fever illness” and the “phantom” part of that can also mean “illusion” or “vision”
With this new quest in mind, Cecil begins to talk to everyone around town until he finds someone who knows where the cave of the Ant Lion resides. Finally he finds someone on the top floor of the inn.
MAN
“It seems that only royalty can enter the Ant Lion’s cave, which lies east of Damcyan. But if we could go, think of all the business we could do..”
With the location known, Cecil and Rydia head out to the South Entrance to the Waterway Channel again. This time they won’t let some old man stop them. They must pass through.
OLD MAN
“yo…you! I see you’re carrying a dark sword! I beg you, lend me a hand!”
CECIL
“What’s wrong?”
OLD MAN
“My daughter Anna was tricked by a minstrel and ran off to Damcyan! I sense evil shrouded over Damcyan!”
CECIL
“then you are… the sage Tela!”
TELA
“I am indeed Tela! I became concerned when a huge monster appeared halfway up the lake on the way to Damcyan. It has an unbelieveable amount of strength. My magic isn’t strong enough. With your dark sword there might be a chance! !? What! That kid is a summoner? She has considerable talent too.”
CECIL
“We must go to Damcyan as well!”
TELA
“Then it’s settled! We’ll hurry to Damcyan together!”
Sage Tela became your companion!
As they progress through the underground waterway, they find a room with a circle and a tile on the ground.
TELA
“alright, we can rest here.”
Tela runs ahead to the point in the center of the circle.
TELA
“If you stand on this magic square, it creates a barrier that won’t let monsters in. You can also use tents and cottages to rest on it, and use it to save. We can use my tent to organize and prepare for the upcoming battle.”
During the middle of the night, Cecil and Tela talk while Rydia sleeps.
TELA
“already asleep? she must have been very tired. Is this girl really…?”
CECIL
“[she is] a summoner from Mist.”
TELA
“she’s hiding a good talent. with practice she can become a master at magic. However, her cute face when she’s asleep reminds me of when Anna was young.”
CECIL
“that person is your…”
TELA
“my only daughter. she ran away to Damcyan to elope with a minstrel because I did not consent [of their union].”
He looks away for a moment, in consideration, then looks back.
TELA
“Why are you going to Damcyan?”
CECIL
“my companion is suffering from a high fever illness in Kaipo.”
TELA
“‘light of the desert’ ? without that there is not much that can be done. You must hurry…”
CECIL
“What is the monster of this cave?”
TELA
“A dreadful beast with 8 huge legs. For the sake of Anna and your companion, we must defeat it! I sense an sinister presence towards Damcyan. I hope it’s just my imagination…”
With that, the two turn in and the next day soon arrives. As they progress, Tela stops and warns them.
TELA
“from here we’ll be above ground for a moment. the monster is under the waterfall in the next area. Be sure to use your tent above ground.”
The two then come outside and make their way around and back in, to chika nitsuu jiru taki [The waterfall leading underground]. Once inside they then dive into the waterfall.
TELA
“The thing is below!” (“he’s” or “it’s” below)
At the bottom they continue making their way through until they come to the exit, which is blocked by two giant tentacles. They approach it and prepare for battle.
TELA
“It’s coming!”
Tentacles pop up and surround the party.
TELA
“it’s Octomammoth!”
The battle with Octomammoth begins! During the battle, Tela may shout out:
TELA
“as expected, the darkness pierces it! Its movements are slowing down (growing weaker!)!”
Eventually the beast is killed.
TELA
“With this, we can go to Damcyan! Through the inner part of the waterfall we will be taken back out to the surface!”
The group exits the cave and approaches Damcyan’s castle when suddenly.. the Red Wings fly by and demolish the castle. Quickly the group rushes in. Damushian Jou [Damcyan Castle]
They find the castle utterly demolished. They find many guards laying on the ground, dead. On the third floor they find Anna..
TELA
“That is… ooohhhh— ANNAAAAA!”
From the right, the minstrel appears. Tela glares at him.
TELA
“you’re that minstrel from back then! You’re the one who did this to Anna!”
MINSTREL
“!?”
Tela rushes into a battle with the minstrel.
TELA
“how dare you touch my daughter…” (the touching is implied.. he literally says “you ..how dare.. my daughter..”
MINSTREL
“You’re wrong!”
TELA
“Tell me what am I wrong about!”
MINSTREL
“Please listen to me!”
TELA
“Shut up!”
MINSTREL
“I beg you!”
TELA
“This pain is Anna’s pain.. …”
MINSTREL
“Anna and I… …”
ANNA
“Please! Both of you please stop!”
Hearing Anna’s voice, Tela stops the battle and rushes back to her side. The minstrel soon joins her on the opposite side, as do both Cecil and Rydia.
TELA
“Anna, you’re alive..?”
ANNA
“Father… he’s… Gilbert is the prince of Damcyan.. He concealed his position when he came to Kaipo as a minstrel. I’m sorry father… for running away… I love Gilbert. But, as we were going to go back to Kaipo to get your consent….”
GILBERT
“someone named Golbeza leading Baron’s Red Wings…[attacked us]”
CECIL
“Who in the world is this person, Golbeza?”
GILBERT
“I don’t really know.. he wore strange black armor… he had a powerful presence”
CECIL
“Why the Red Wings!?”
GILBERT
“He attacked us after taking the crystal of Fire… my father, my mother, and Anna all shielded me from their arrows…”
TELA
“[you loved] him that much..”
ANNA
“father… please forgive me… I… love Gilbert..”
GILBERT
“Anna!”
TELA
“Anna! Annaaaa!”
Anna dies.
TELA
“…what kind of person is this Golbeza!”
GILBERT
“most recently, he leads Baron’s Red Wings to collect the crystals..”
Note: in FF4C this line was changed to “Anna! Anna, open your eyes. Anna, please! Don’t leave me!” but the line has absolutely nothing to do with Anna. Really, FF4C (from what I’ve read) makes Gilbert seem way whinier than he is in the original.
TELA
“Shameful! Crying for Anna won’t bring her back to life! Golbeza of Baron.. I will have revenge for Anna!”
Tela starts to leave. Cecil tries to stop him.
CECIL
“Tela, by yourself..!?”
He’s knocked out of the way.
TELA
“I don’t need any help! Golbeza is mine alone!”
Tela leaves the room.
Tela left the party.
GILBERT
“A Annaa… (sob sob)..”
Gilbert cries. Rydia eventually says something.
RYDIA
“Weakling!” (Coward!)
He looks at her.
RYDIA
“you’re a man! you’re an adult! why are you..! Even I [lost someone]..”
CECIL
“Rydia..”
GILBERT
“that’s right… it’s like you said, I’m a weakling (coward)! So I’m going to stay near Anna. Nothing else is worth worrying about.”
Cecil walks around and whacks Gilbert over the head.
CECIL
“You’re not the only one who is sad! And if you act like that, Anna won’t be happy! Moreover, the reason we’re here now is because we need your help.”
GILBERT
“you came to me for help?”
CECIL
“I am Cecil. My companion collapsed in Kaipo with a high fever illness and I must save her. I need the ‘light of the desert’ no matter what. You can help.”
GILBERT
“I can help..”
CECIL
“that’s right. For Rosa’s sake.. I beg you!”
GILBERT
“Rosa seems like an important person… you shouldn’t have to lose your loved one.”
Gilbert pauses a moment, to think, before turning to face Cecil.
GILBERT
“The ‘light of the desert’ is created when the Ant Lion lays her eggs. The cave lays to the east, across the ford. To cross the ford we can use Damcyan’s vessel, the hovercraft. We can also reach Kaipo by crossing the ford.”
He glances between Rydia and Cecil.
GILBERT
“well, let’s go!”
Gilbert of the Royal Family has become your companion!
Gilbert leads the party out, then returns alone for one last brief moment with Anna.
GILBERT
“Farewell… Anna!”
Back on the world map, the ground near the castle explodes and a hovercraft rises up with the party already inside. They then take the hovercraft to the lair of the Ant Lion, Ant Lion no Doukutsu (Ant Lion’s Cave). Here they work their way down to Ant Lion no su (Ant Lion’s Nest). As they approach the center of the room, Gilbert stops them.
GILBERT
“here is where the Ant Lion lays her eggs.”
Gilbert then goes alone when suddenly the entire room shakes and the Ant Lion’s claws appear.
RYDIA
“Kyaaaa!”
GILBERT
“It’s all right. This Ant Lion is an adult. It would never harm a human. I’ll go pick it up.”
Gilbert goes to retrieve the “Light of the Desert” and is suddenly attacked.
GILBERT
“Uwaa!”
CECIL
“Let’s go [help], Rydia!”
The party then is forced to fight the Ant Lion. However, it is no match to our heroes and is quickly defeated.
Obtained the “Light of the Desert”
GILBERT
“It can’t be, it’s impossible! Why did the Ant Lion..”
CECIL
“recently, the number of monsters seems to be increasing. Even beasts who normally wouldn’t, are starting to attack [people]. I knew it, something is causing this to happen..”
RYDIA
“[we need to] Hurry to Rosa!”
CECIL
“right, let’s go!”
With the “Light of the Desert” in hand, they return to Kaipo and race to the house where Rosa is staying.
CECIL
“Rosa!”
Cecil then uses the ‘Light of the Desert.’
The “Light of the Desert” shines on Rosa!
ROSA
“uun…”
Rosa’s fever clears up.
ROSA
“Cecil! you’re alive! I’m relieved..”
CECIL
“you’re being unreasonable..”
This line I can’t tell if he’s just joking, or if he’s making a reference to the fact that she came to Kaipo following him. Maybe it’s a bit of both.
ROSA
“I heard that you died in the earthquake at Mist.. but, I never believed it..”
CECIL
“I’m sorry [that I worried you].. by the way, who is Golbeza?”
ROSA
“The king invited him to take your place as the commander of the Red Wings. The king has been acting weirder and weirder lately. He’s like Golbeza’s puppet, used to collect all of the crystals. He already has Mysidia’s crystal of water that you gave him. [Now he needs] Damcyan’s crystal of fire, Fabul’s crystal of wind and Troia’s crystal of earth.”
GILBERT
“The crystal of fire is already in his hands..”
CECIL
“This is Gilbert. He’s the prince of Damcyan. It’s thanks to him that you were healed. And this child is from Mist… she’s Rydia.”
RYDIA
“Are you okay?”
ROSA
“Thank you Rydia, Gilbert. If Damcyan was already attacked, we can assume the next target will be Fabul. (cough cough)!”
CECIL
“Rosa, you’re over doing it. We will go to Fabul!”
GILBERT
“but to get to Fabul we need to pass Mt. Hobs, which is covered in thick ice..”
ROSA
“…Rydia, can you cast fire?”
RYDIA
“! …no, I can’t cast it..”
ROSA
“You’re a summoner and fire is the most basic spell of black magic. You should be able to cast it… uuu (cough)!”
CECIL
“Rosa! I knew it was too soon for you!”
ROSA
“I’ll be fine. Besides, I’m a white wizard. I won’t be a burden.”
CECIL
“…..”
GILBERT
“Cecil… Rosa wants to be together with you.”
CECIL
“I understand. Rosa..let’s go together. It’s already evening.. tomorrow morning we’ll go. Tonight, get some rest.”
ROSA
“Cecil.. okay..”
White Wizard Rosa has become your companion!
That night…
Gilbert, unable to sleep, goes out to the lake of Kaipo.
GILBERT
“….”
He begins to play his harp….
GILBERT
“As I thought, I’m still lonely…Anna”
Suddenly a monster appears and approaches Gilbert.
GILBERT
“Uwaaa!”
And without warning, it attacks. During the battle, Anna’s spirit appears to give a message to him.
ANNA
“Show your courage!” (or “bring out your courage!”)
GILBERT
“A Annaa!”
ANNA
“you are feeling that you are weak …. Believe in yourself!”
Anna’s spirit fades away
GILBERT
“Anna, stop!”
MONSTER
“uuu gubebebebebeeee!”
The monster dies. Gilbert turns to see Anna’s spirit floating on the lake.
GILBERT
“Anna!”
ANNA
“Gilbert, I must go soon… my huge spirit will become one with you [for your benefit]…”
GILBERT
“Anna! please don’t do it!” (please don’t go!)
Her spirit floats off, pausing only a brief moment to utter..
ANNA
“Gilbert, reveal your courage! Don’t let Golbeza have the crystals… You loved me, now it’s time to show that love to all of your people..”
With her spirit gone, Gilbert thinks to himself.
GILBERT
“Anna, I’ll fight! But, even with courage you speak of.. what am I supposed to do, Anna?”
The morning approaches and the party now has a new mission… to warn and defend Fabul.
