So with a movie like this, you can imagine my anticipation to seeing it. I remember seeing the previews for it on TV and thinking “Bri and I should probably see it.” Well, time didn’t let us see it but it was (somewhat recently) released on DVD and we got a copy to see for ourselves.
Plot
The plot revolves around Katie, a student, and her boyfriend Micah, a day trader, who live in a two-story tract house in suburban San Diego, California. Katie claims that a ghostly presence has haunted her since her youth and believes that it has followed her to their new home. Micah has bought a video camera to try and capture the ghostly presence on film; mostly by filming them while they sleep.
That’s the basic gist. Very simplistic.
During the film they’re visited by Dr. Fredrichs, a self-professed psychic, who deems that Katie’s ghostly presence is actually demonic and feeds off negative energy. The demon is intent on haunting Katie no matter where she goes and the psychic highly recommends that they contact a demonologist named Dr. Johann Averies. Micah feels that it’s a bunch of baloney and decides to try his own methods of making contact with the spirit–the Ouija board.
As the days go on the activity becomes more violent and strange. By the time Micah agrees to contact the demonologist it becomes too late and the film ends with a disappointing climax.
Good
Well it certainly is unique. I will give the critics that. And I suppose it’s more realistic than most horror films. Also the Ouija board scene was kind of cool. Unfortunately that’s about all I can give the movie in the good section.
Bad
IT ISN’T @#($&@# SCARY!!
I don’t know if they let little kids watch the film to review it and that’s why every critic is writing that it scared them into nightmares or what but it didn’t scare me. I didn’t even jump once. I don’t think Bri did either. You would think that a movie that claims to be one of the scariest films of all time would at least give me a startle, even just once.
And a lot of the time you feel like you’re watching someone’s personal home videos. So it’s not all that exciting. I mean, with exception to a few points in the movie, it’s pretty boring. You see Micah playing his guitar, Katie talking with her friends, them brushing their teeth.. I mean, seriously.
What The?
The alternative ending.. I guess. I don’t know what else to put here.
Overall it’s a very disappointing film that was hyped up waaaaaaay, waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much. I’ll give it 2/5 just because, while it is kind of boring, it IS original. I saw it for free and I recommend you do the same if you want to see it.
